University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign releases results of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for Pressure Core's Waste Pressure Power System for Abbott Power Plant.

Updated: 6 days ago

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) was contracted by Pressure Core to complete a scientific Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for their patent-pending waste pressure power system designed to support decarbonization efforts at the Abbott Power Plant. Today, Pressure Core is releasing the results of the LCA study. The LCA analyzes the life cycle environmental impacts, primarily the life cycle GHG

emissions of the waste pressure energy recovery system with an expected capacity of 250 kW, to be integrated with the existing facilities at the Abbott Power Plant in Champaign, Illinois, to supply electricity to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s internal grid, which provides electricity to buildings and other users within the campus.

As a result of the LCA study, it was found that Pressure Core's waste pressure energy recovery system project has net-negative emissions resulting from the avoidance of electricity produced from the grid at the average grid emission factor.

The results of this study will be utilized to satisfy the requirements of Title 26, Chapter I, Subchapter A, Part 1 § 1.45Y-5 of the Code of Federal Regulations on "Greenhouse gas emissions rates for qualified facilities under section 45Y" of the Internal Revenue Code. This LCA report has been prepared per ISO 14040/14044 (“ISO 14040:2006 — Environmental Management — Life Cycle Assessment — Principles and Framework” 2006; “ISO 14044:2006 — Environmental Management — Life Cycle Assessment — Requirements and Guidelines” 2006) requirements for public release of comparative assessments for third parties. Pressure Core thanks the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator, Sebastiano Giardinella and Varun Gopalakrishnan, respectively, of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for their scientific rigor applied to the LCA.
